The reason why Lee Yong-dae, who won the gold medal in collaboration with Lee Hyo-jung at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, had to win the gold medal in doubles is drawing attention. Lee Yong-dae is currently playing coach for the Yonex Badminton Team.
Coach Lee, who appeared on a YouTube channel run by former professional baseball player Lee Dae-ho on the 1st, confessed, "I wanted to win a gold medal, so I decided to play doubles."
"When I was young, all of our badminton won gold medals in doubles," coach Lee said. "I was good at singles, but I decided to play doubles because I wanted to win gold."
Regarding the reason why he could not participate in singles and doubles at the same time, he explained, "It is too exhausting," adding, "You can participate in mixed doubles and men's doubles, but it is too difficult to do it with singles."
Coach Lee's remarks came in the process of explaining the characteristics of the event after a badminton match with Lee Dae-ho, and have been re-examined after Ahn Se-young won the gold medal in the women's singles badminton event at the 2024 Paris Olympics on the 5th.
In addition, the coach almost missed the 2014 Incheon Asian Games due to the association's administrative mistake.
At that time, coach Lee and former national team member Kim Ki-jung were subject to drug testing by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) last year, but were not properly notified by the association, so they did not report their location to the World Anti-Doping Agency three times, and the Badminton International Federation suspended them for a year.
The association then formed a legal advisory group and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and held a re-deliberation, and the BWF Doping Hearing Committee held a re-deliberation and canceled the decision to suspend the qualification.
In an interview after winning the gold medal, Ahn Se-young criticized the way he fostered players and the association's regret.
